Templates are boring prototypes of work to be reused again and again. Yet, the template benefits for authors are amazing. Here’s why…
WHAT ARE TEMPLATES?
If templates didn’t do so much good, we’d banish them to the backblocks somewhere, ignoring them forever. Yet, call it a kick-back from my ex-corporate years, I am. A. Big. Fan. Of. Templates.
So what are templates?
Templates come in many names, such as master lists, frameworks, moulds, and jigs and grids. They’re also known as a matrix layout, casting, a mock-up or a blueprint of a trailblazing yardstick.
Yes, all that for a template.
WHY DO TEMPLATES LOOK SO UGLY AND BORING?
Not to ugly shame this amazing tool, but sadly, you’ll find most templates in corporate colours or those icky bland brands. They’re like that pair of scuffed and sturdy flat black shoes you hide in the back of your closet, only worn when no one is around.
But they work.
And they look boring because it’s generally just for work.
You can find templates in pdf, flashcards, graphs, squares, lines, and boxes, calendars, PowerPoint presentations, and flow charts or with those generic cartoons that we’re all guilty of using.
Not to mention those template covers with their corporate-wearing-awkward-desk-posing-people that never-ever make you want to rush through the door and slam down your credit card and say, “I’ll beat the trend and buy that sexy template, today.’
Hold on, cupcake, templates have their benefits, too.
THE BENEFITS OF USING TEMPLATES
Sorry, but templates don’t come with healthcare packages for your fur babies, but there is a tonne of benefits to help you with your job by using these tools:
Templates save you time
They’re easy to share
Can be cheap to make, bake, or create.
Or they are a one-time investment to reuse a gazillion times.
They help you set and maintain an industry standard.
Can give you that rip-roaring head start on a project.
They increase efficiency, thereby (doesn’t that sounds corporatey-posh) saving you time and money. Ka-Ching. Ka-Ching!
TEMPLATES FOR AUTHORS:
Even though most templates are rigid forms, like most corporate coffee lounges filled with starchy collared shirts — templates can also increase your flexibility for certain tasks, especially for authors.
Using author templates offers uniformity and continuity to help maintain your author brand. Sure, they can be repetitive, but that’s what makes you recognisable and familiar to your readers.
This is where author template benefits kick in, they’re great for your social media post settings on Canva, blog templates, pre-made media templates, even website templates etc. (Read that again in case that penny didn’t drop off the table.)

AUTHOR TEMPLATE BENEFITS & BONUSES:
You can completely nix the reworks! That’s right, if you have an author template in place, you don’t need to rewrite, edit, and format the layouts of certain tasks because it’ll already be done and dusted within the template.
Organisation is Queen! Having a template, like the amazing Author Master List, will cut down the time you spend searching for things within your author platform.
All done in a few clicks.
Having author templates on hand can also be a source of inspiration! Especially for social media, where all you do is fill in the blanks. Yes, it can be that easy.
Errors are reduced because having author templates in place lets you skip the hard work because it’s already done for you. Especially for repeating processes, a template ensures you don’t miss out on anything.
Creating or investing in a set of pre-made template designs and documents that you can customise into templates is a great tool for any author’s tool kits.
